2021 10U / 11U Travel Team Tryouts

Format for 2021

The Minneapolis Millers will be holding tryouts for 10U and 11U Players on Sunday, February 28th and Sunday, March 7th.  Our tryouts are a two day process.  Please plan to attend both days.

If your player has a conflict either day between 11:00am and 8:00pm, please contact Steph Kappel at  We will make every effort to schedule your player’s time slot to accommodate your conflict.

Tryout Location

University of Minnesota - URW Sports Field Complex Dome
600 25th Ave SE
Minneapolis, MN

All tryout activities will be conducted at the U of MN Student Recreational Sports Dome.  The dome tryout facility allows the association to conduct all evaluations more efficiently, and with a consistent set of evaluators.

Run of the Day

Players will try out in small groups sometime between 11:00 and 8:00.  Your player’s session will be approximately 45 minutes.  Please check back for specific times as we get closer to the date.

Sunday, February 28 - Tryout Session 1 Format

All candidates will participate in the following evaluations:

  • Hitting - batting cage hitting
  • Pitching - all interested players will throw several pitches and be measured on speed (by radar gun) and accuracy
  • Fielding Grounders - each player will field multiple ground balls
  • Fielding Fly Balls - each player will field multiple fly balls
  • Running - players will be timed in the 50 yard dash

Note that tryout scores are based on mechanics and fundamentals more than pure results. For example, a player who tracks a fly ball perfectly and then drops it will likely receive a better score than a player who struggles to track the ball, and then makes a lucky diving grab.

Sunday, March 7 - Tryout Session 2 Format

All players will participate in Session 2 of the tryout. The Session 2 tryout will be a controlled scrimmage that simulates real game play.  Every player will have the opportunity to hit, base-run, and to play multiple positions in the field during the scrimmage.  In addition, candidates who expressed interest in pitching and/or catching on their registration will have the opportunity to run through pitch / catch stations at Session 2.

Additional Key Tryout Information

Check-in and Warm Ups - To adhere to the University of Minnesota’s COVID-19 requirements, tryouts will be closed to spectators and player check-in / drop-off will be outside.  Your player will be allowed to enter the building for a brief (10 minute) warm-up shortly before their tryout begins.  You will receive additional information about the check-in process and warmups via email the week of 2/21.

Attire - Players should wear baseball appropriate clothing, including full length pants (no shorts).   Tryouts are the few days each year we ask players to not wear Millers gear.  We ask that returning players not wear attire that has a MYBA logo on it, including baseball caps, jersey, etc... To minimize bias, your child will not be permitted to wear any piece of their Millers uniform, or a shirt with their name on it.

Equipment - Due to the pandemic, equipment cannot be shared outside households.  Each player should have their own bat, helmet, glove and water bottle.  Male players are required to wear a protective cup. If your family does not have a full set of baseball equipment, please contact  ASAP to request borrowing gear.  Catchers who have their own gear should bring it to Session 2 tryouts.  We will have additional sets of catchers gear

Pandemic PlayIf your player is ill or has cold / flu-like symptoms please keep them home.  In addition, if your player is awaiting test results due to COVID exposure or has recently tested positive and is still self-isolating, they should not attend tryouts.  Contact if your player will be missing tryouts due to illness. All candidates are required to wear masks covering their nose and mouth while at the field, including tryouts and are expected to social distance at all times.

Families will receive detailed information about second round tryouts, including group assignments the week of 3/1.

If your player has a conflict with tryout times and you have not yet notified the registrar, please do so ASAP by emailing

See you at the UofM Rec Dome soon!

Program Orientation Meetings

Each year MYBA conducts program orientation meetings.  These meetings provide an introduction to the program including:

  • Overview of the program and our mission
  • General program calendar and schedules
  • Player, parent/guardian, and coaching expectations for the upcoming season

These meetings provide information vital to ensuring travel baseball is the right fit for you and your prospective player. For 2021, program orientation meetings will be mandatory for the parents/guardians of players new to the Millers Travel program, and optional for returning families. Orientation meetings will be online, held live at the following times:

2021 Age Eligibility Cutoffs

The birthday cutoff for determining age group is April 30, which is in line with national standards. However, players born between May 1 and August 31 have the option of “playing up”, as MYBA recognizes the April 30 cutoff prevents players born in this range from playing with their classmates.  If you choose to play up, you cannot waiver back down after the teams are selected.
