What to expect at Tryouts
1st Round Tryout Format
All 12U, 13U, 14U and 15A candidates will participate in the following evaluations:
Note that tryout scores are based on mechanics and fundamentals more than pure results. For example, a player who tracks a fly ball perfectly and then drops it will likely receive a better score than a player who struggles to track the ball, and then makes a lucky diving grab.
2nd Round Tryout Format
The 2nd tryout will again include hitting, and fielding evaluations, as well as a simulated game format. Every player will have the opportunity to hit, base-run, and play multiple positions in the field during the scrimmage. Pitching and catching stations are included in the 2nd round for those who indicate those positions during registration. Catchers who have their own gear should bring it to the 2nd tryout. We will have gear available for catchers who do not have their own and it will be sanitized between players.
Additional Key Tryout Information
Parent/Guardian Meeting - To ensure we are the right fit for new families, there will be an overview of the Millers travel program prior to tryouts. For those new to the Millers travel program, we ask that you consider this a mandatory session to learn more about the time and commitment required for the program. Parents of returning players are welcome to participate.
These meetings will be held virtually. Please plan to attend one of the following sessions. Players do not need to attend.
Thursday, September 9th at 7:00pm meet.google.com/nts-wgpr-eqp
Tuesday, September 14th at 8:00pm meet.google.com/vny-gups-nsj
Check-in table will open 30 minutes before each tryout session begins. Your player will be assigned a unique pinnie number. Please return your player’s pinnie after each tryout.
Warm-ups - Allow your player some time to warm up before tryouts. The tryout location has ample room for kids to play catch and get loose. Bring a glove to help your player warm up, or arrange a warm-up 'buddy' beforehand.
Tryouts are considered closed to spectators - Please drop your player at the field and return to pick them up after tryouts.
Attire - players should wear baseball appropriate clothing, including full length pants (no shorts). Tryouts are the few days each year we ask players to not wear Millers gear. We ask that returning players not wear attire that has a MYBA logo on it, including baseball caps, jersey, etc... To minimize bias, your child will not be permitted to wear any piece of their Millers uniform, or a shirt with their name on it.
Equipment - Please note, beginning in 2022 MBL will once again allow USSSA approved bats. Accordingly, these bats will be allowed at tryouts this fall as well. Players will be required to identify the type of bat they are using on the field during tryouts. For more information about MBL bat standards, visit: MBL/MBT - NEW MBL/MBT BAT STANDARDS
Each player should have their own helmet, glove and water bottle. Male players are required to wear a protective cup. We will have bats available at the field. If your family does not have a glove or batting helmet, please contact Registrar@mplsmillers.org ASAP to request borrowing gear. Catchers who have their own gear should bring it to round two tryouts. We will have additional sets of catchers gear and will sanitize between use for players who do not have their own.
Pandemic Play – If your player is ill or has cold / flu-like symptoms please keep them home. Unvaccinated players who are in quarantine due to exposure to a positive COVID case are not allowed to attend tryouts. Vaccinated players who have been exposed to a positive COVID case and have COVID symptoms are also not allowed to participate in tryouts. Contact email@example.com if your player will be missing tryouts due to illness or quarantine. All players should have a mask with them while at the field. We recommend unvaccinated players wear masks when social distancing requirements cannot be guaranteed - i.e. large group gatherings, station explanations/instruction, etc...
Families will receive detailed information regarding second round tryouts the week of 9/20.
