The MYBA Board has approved some changes for 2012 which we believe will make tryouts more comprehensive and fair, but parents may find some of these to be quite a departure from previous years.

• Each player will attend two tryouts - In past years players were asked to attend one tryout in early February, with less than half the players asked back for a second tryout a few weeks later. This year, all players will attend 2 tryouts, with the first tryout being Feb 4 (Feb 11 is the backup date), and the 2nd tryout being Feb 25 or 26, depending on age. It is possible some returning players at our U9-10 age group will be rostered without participating in the second tryout.
• Scoring -- Independent talent evaluators from local high schools will score players on their overall mechanics of batting, throwing, and fielding. In addition, each player will be timed for base running.

Second Round Tryouts: Saturday, February 25/Sunday, February 26:   This year, with a few possible exceptions, all U10-12 players will participate in a second tryout. Players requested to participate will be contacted with their time slot no later than Tuesday, February 22. The time of the second tryout will vary based on Age and Skill Level, however, 10U players, can expect to try out early on the morning of 2/25, 11U players in the afternoon of 2/25. 12U players will be spread across 2/25 and 2/26. Due to the large turnout at 12U, some 12U players may be asked to attend a session on Saturday AND Sunday.

Location: Sessions will be held at the YWCA Fieldhouse, 2121 E Lake St., Minneapolis (612-215-4333) located one block west of Hiawatha behind Minneapolis South High School.

• The tryout on Feb 11 is a make-up tryout only. Please plan on attending the Feb 4 tryout unless your son is sick or has a scheduling conflict.
• If you have a scheduling conflict and are unable to make your player’s designated time slot, he/she may try out with an older age group. However, he/she may not try out with younger age groups, as the field layout gives unfair advanatages to older players.
• Tryout Fee: Players are required to pay a $40 non-refundable tryout fee and $100 committment fee. Please see the Fees document for an overview of the Commitment Fee.

What To Bring: Baseball Glove, gym shoes, protective cup. Bringing your own bat is encouraged. Helmets are available, but bring your own to ensure a good fit.

Age Groups

You must officially declare the age you are trying out for prior to tryout check-in. On the online registration page, register for your age group as of April 30 as shown below.

(Age 14) 5/1/97-4/30/98 or in 8th grade
(Age 13) 5/1/98-4/30/99 or in 7th grade
(Age 12) 5/1/99 - 4/30/2000 or in 6th grade
(Age 11) 5/1/00 - 4/30/01 or in 5th grade
(Age 9-10) 5/1/2001 or younger

Residency: Open to Minneapolis residents only. The registering player must reside in the City of Minneapolis with a parent or guardian.

Age Eligibility: 2012 Birthday cutoff is April 30. Register for your age group as of April 30 as shown below.

Waiver Up Options: If your son is born between May 1 and August 31, and he is in the higher grade, (i.e., young for his grade), MYBA offers the option to waiver up to play at his grade level. However, you must officially declare, on the registration form, the age level your son is trying out for that season. If your son tries out for the older grade, he must play on the team that which he is placed. He is not able to waiver down after the teams are selected. If your son falls into this age gap, please register your son for the age level that most “fits” his ability.

2nd graders are welcome to tryout, but will only be offered a roster spot if the 10U single A team needs additional players to fill their roster.

9-10 year-olds - $305
11 year-olds - $380
12 year-olds - $405
13 year-olds - $430
14 year-olds - $455

• Tryout fees are $40, this is in addition to the Participation Fees listed above.
• There is a $100 Committment Fee
• Financial aid is available.
• Fee includes uniform and two or three tournament fees.
• Players selected for AAA teams may be required to pay an additional $25-30, if that team elects to roster only 11 players.
